Beginning tonight a Rochester Police Officer will patrol the park trail segment running along the Genesee River from the Riverview Apartments to the River Campus side of the Lackawanna Pedestrian Bridge from 11:00 pm to 3:00 am. This special patrol will occur on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, except for the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, for the remaining weeks of the Fall 2012 semester.
The uniformed police officer will approach late night pedestrian users of the trail and encourage them to use other options such as the well-lighted pathways from Riverview to Brooks Landing to the River Campus via the footbridge, shuttles, or the Safe Ride Home program. While the primary effort of this special patrol is educational, to encourage late night use of safer routes for travel, the officer may have to take enforcement action in cases of underage drinking or the use of illegal drugs. The Rochester Police Officer will be in radio contact with University Security to help address questions as they arise.
The University continues to work with the campus community and its neighbors on ways to promote a safer environment. Two CCTV devices and a Blue Light Emergency Phone will be installed in the coming weeks on River Campus near the access ramp to the Lackawanna Bridge trail. In addition, we continue discussion with local authorities on ideas that promote personal safety for users of this public trail.
The September 20, 2012, message about safe use of the trail from Dean of Students Matthew Burns and Students' Association President Roshal Patel is posted below.
On July 23, the University and City of Rochester celebrated the opening of the "Rails-to-Trails" Erie Lackawanna Pedestrian Bridge. The renovated railroad bridge over the Genesee River creates a new extension of the Genesee Riverway Trail System for walking and recreation.
Now that the new bridge is in greater use with the start of the academic year, students are reminded to exercise personal safety habits:

Safety Tips to Remember:
Protect Your Bike
University Security Services recommends that owners lock their bicycles with a quality U-style lock. A U-style lock provides much greater protection than any cable lock, and most chain locks. A U- style lock with a keyhole located in the middle of the straight bar (instead of at the end) offers increased protection. In use, attach the U-style lock to the bike rack, bike frame, and at least one wheel. With quick release wheels, position the front wheel along side the rear wheel and attach the lock to both wheels, rack, and frame. Use a secondary lock for seats, accessories, or wheels that cannot be secured with the primary lock.

Added Bicycle Safety Tips:
Limited Time Offer....While Supplies Last
Beginning November 1, 2012, University Security Services is pleased to offer a Kryptonite brand bike lock to members of the University community at a discounted price of $30. Locks may be purchased at the University Security Center, 612 Wilson Boulevard (cash or check). A ticket for a lock may be purchased at the Common Market in Wilson Commons on the River Campus. The Common Market accepts cash or Flex. Tickets will also be available at the Eastman School Cashier's Window in the Main Hall (cash, check, MasterCard, Visa). You must present your UR ID. Tickets may be redeemed at these Security office locations: University Security Center, 612 Wilson Blvd; Sigma Phi Epsilon House, 515 Fraternity Road; Room 101, Eastman Student Living Center.

At about 11:48 am today, Rochester Police and Security made contact with the individual who reportedly had dropped what looked like a pistol as he was leaving a computer work station in Gleason Library early Friday afternoon. A student in Gleason recognized the individual from the camera image posted on the Security web site. Security set-up observation points around the library and monitored the person awaiting arrival of Rochester Police. A Security supervisor monitored the Library's security cameras as the individual quietly went about using a computer.
Rochester Police arrived and made contact with the 20 year old male, whereupon it was learned he was carrying a CO2 powered BB pistol and a knife, purportedly for self protection. Police confiscated the items. His identity was verified and it was determined he had no affiliation with the University. Because the individual had not displayed or used either item on Friday or Saturday, had no record of prior warnings from Security and was not being sought on any other charges, RPD decided to release him with an admonition not to return. Security provided a ban form, after which he left the University.
At approximately 1:15 pm today a student called University Security to report that he had just seen an object he thought might have been a gun fall to the floor - from the person of an individual sitting at a computer terminal nearby in Gleason Library. The unidentified male appeared to be gathering his belongings to leave the area when the incident occurred. The person picked up the item and put it into a pocket, then exited the 2nd floor via the stairway nearby. That is when the student called Security.
Rochester Police were notified immediately and several officers responded very quickly to the Security command post outside the building. A low-key but careful search of the area was conducted after which it was concluded that the individual had left the area.
Based on information developed subsequent to the event, it is believed the individual entered the Gleason Library at about 11:45 am, whereupon he went to a computer terminal and remained there until the dropped object incident occurred. He listened to music with ear-bud type headphones for a period of time while at the computer terminal. At no time did he display any object or threaten any library patron.
He left the Library via the stairway at approximately 1:12 pm. It was noted later that an RTS bus departed from the Rush Rhees Library stop on Library Road at about 1:15 pm. He was not located on campus.
The computer used by the individual was taken for safekeeping and forensic review. A security officer remained in the Gleason Library area through the balance of the afternoon and early evening, in frequent contact with Library staff and patrons, to offer assistance if requested.
If you have any information about this individual please contact University Security at585-275-3333, or Rochester Police at 9-1-1.
At approximately 10:30 pm on Thursday night, October 28, 2010, a male undergraduate was walking southbound on the sidewalk in the 1400 block of South Plymouth Avenue, near the RTS bus shelter across from the Plymouth Gardens residence tower. He passed an unidentified male walking on the sidewalk in the opposite (northbound) direction while appearing to talk on a cell phone. After they passed, the suspect called out to the student to stop and turn around. The student did turn, but continued to back away. The suspect called out to student, again, ordering him to stop moving and then demanding that he give up his money or he would be shot. No weapon was displayed.
The student began to run towards the pedestrian bridge, crossing it over to the River Campus. While en route, he knocked the handle off at least two of the Blue Light Emergency Phones along his route, automatically alerting Security Dispatchers that something was occurring. They began checking the bridge area with CCTV and observed the student running alone as he approached the Blue Light Phone on the River Campus side. Officers were dispatched to both sides of the bridge and an officer met the student at the Blue Light Phone while he was talking with the Dispatcher. He was placed in a Security vehicle and 9-1-1 was called.
One Security Officer assigned to the Riverview/Brooks Landing patrol area was pulling out of the Staybridge Inn lot when the first radio broadcast was made. The officer reported observing a lone individual walking westbound from the area shortly beforehand. That officer then alerted two Rochester Police officers who he knew were parked and conferring in another section of the Staybridge lot. The police immediately began to search the area.
The other Security Officer assigned to the Riverview/Brooks Landing patrol area observed a lone individual traveling westbound on Brooks Avenue from Genesee Street. He followed the pedestrian from a safe distance for a short period before breaking off observation due to darkness and arrival of police in the area. One individual was later brought to the scene where the student was being interviewed. However, he did not recognize the person, who was then released.
The student received no injuries and lost no possessions. Any substantive updates will be distributed to the campus community.
University Security is investigating thefts of laptop computers and other electronics that occurred in the Towers during the late evening and early morning hours of Saturday, September 11 and Sunday, September 12, 2010. Resident students reported being away from their suites, during which the main entry door and, in some cases, individual bedroom doors, were left open or unlocked. A total of five laptop computers, five iPod style devices and an external hard drive were reported taken. The students filed reports with the Rochester Police Department. Student Aide patrols in the Towers have been increased and they will be watchful for breaches of good security practices. Possible suspect(s) information has been developed. However it is insufficient in its details at this time to release with this notice. Residents are reminded to keep suite and bedroom doors closed and locked when sleeping, or when spaces will be unattended.
On Sunday, September 12, 2010, GPS units were reported taken from each of five parked cars in the Hill Court and Intercampus Drive lots between Friday, September 10 and Sunday, September 12. Two of the vehicles had iPod style devices taken as well. Two other vehicle owners reported that their cars had been rummaged through, but nothing was taken. Security officers on patrol discovered two of the break-ins. CCTV images from surveillance cameras in the Hill Court lot are under review. Security patrols through campus parking areas have been emphasized and University Parking has been alerted, as well. The theft of property or accessories from plain view areas of vehicles is a crime of opportunity. Please remove valuables from plain view when parking in University lots. Users should check on their vehicles frequently, or ask a friend to check on it.
If you believe you have information about any of these events please call University Security at 585-275-3333 or call the Rochester Police at 9-1-1. We encourage you to continue to exercise good safety practices. Report immediately any suspicious or unusual activity you may observe. Call Security from the nearest Blue Light Emergency Phone (located along pedestrian pathways and in parking areas) or by dialing 13 from any University telephone. Dial 585-275-3333 from any cell phone or dial #413 from AT&T or Verizon cell phones (a free call).
It is inevitable that September 11, 2001 will forever remind us of the frailty of human existence. Nine years later, images of destruction and disarray in New York City, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania remain stamped in our memories as if it were yesterday.
Yet amid the terror and grief, it was impossible not to celebrate the resilience in images of everyday Americans reaching out to one another. Of firemen praying over the body of a beloved priest. Of persevering rescue crews stubbornly erecting an American flag where the World Trade Center once stood. Of hospital workers, including those at URMC, who stood at-the-ready, hoping to use their skills to ease the suffering. Images that remind each of us of our fundamental bond with all human life and each other.
As we recognize the anniversary of this tragedy and the impact that it's had on our nation, we remember the 2,996 people who died and their loved ones who suffered life-changing losses. We reflect on the sacrifices of the first responders and caregivers with whom we have so much in common. Please join me in observing this solemn occasion by celebrating a common humanity that transcends any of our differences.

University Security Officers apprehended a suspect shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday evening, June 24, 2010, moments after he had stolen a speaker amplifier from Messinger Hall at the Eastman School of Music. The officer was about to enter Messinger when he came across the individual. Upon inquiring about the individual's presence and purpose, the suspect provided vague and contradictory answers. Additional Security Officers responded from Eastman and Rochester Police were notified. Eastman staff on site for an evening program assisted officers with information about the equipment in the suspect's possession. Timothy Cornish of Rochester remains in the Monroe County Jail, while the follow-up investigation continues to resolve other recent cases.
Additional Security Officers, who have been on site at Eastman since last week, will remain in place through at least the closure of the Theatre for summer construction. Officers and Eastman staff work together closely in a joint effort to protect the Eastman community and its programs. This collaboration has proven effective once again.
We encourage everyone at Eastman to keep a continued watch over our neighborhood. Immediately report any suspicious or unusual activity you may observe. Call Security from the nearest Blue Light Emergency Phone (located throughout the Eastman campus) or by dialing 13 from any University telephone. From any cell phone dial 585-275-3333, or dial #413 from AT&T or Verizon cell phones (a free call).

Additional Security Measures Taken in Response to the Series of Incidents Near the University
Rochester Police have arrested several suspects in connection with the crimes that occurred last week on the periphery of the University's River Campus.
City police believe that some of the suspects in custody may be implicated in more than one of the crimes in the southwest Rochester area and in other neighborhoods. Four incidents close to the River Campus occurred on May 27, 28, and 29 and involved University students.
"University Security's response in each case has been exemplary," said Ronald Paprocki, senior vice president for administration and finance at the University. "Security's immediate response and quick communication with Rochester Police were instrumental in the prompt arrest of a suspect in an assault on Wilson Boulevard," he said. Paprocki emphasized that Security's close working relationship with the Rochester Police Department "is essential to our safety program and its effectiveness."
Walter Mauldin, director of University Security Services, said, "We have been pleased by the prompt and thorough investigation of these crimes and by the high priority the Rochester Police Department has placed on the safety of the neighborhood."
While there are no students living in the Riverview Apartments during the summer, the normal academic year security patrol levels for Brooks Landing and Riverview are being maintained. The University has staff and students in leased space in the area. Additional patrol staff has been added on the River Campus from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m. every day. The lights at Fauver Stadium will stay on during the night to create a brighter mid-campus environment.
Members of the Security staff have met with University employees in the Brooks Landing buildings, and outreach efforts will continue to keep students in residence on campus this summer apprised of security developments and reminded about safe practices. Security and Facilities personnel monitor the University Calendar, but are not always aware of events, such as meetings and conferences, scheduled during the summer months. According to Mauldin, "It is important that departments post events they are hosting so that appropriate security and support services can be alerted to the possible need for services and special attention." Security Services' special events coordinator is Mike Epping at 275-1087.
Paprocki pointed out that the promptness of the arrests associated with the recent incidents that have occurred close to campus is encouraging and a positive development. "Security will continue to work closely with the Rochester Police Department, maintain its increased patrol activity, and communicate with faculty, staff, and students regarding personal safety."
NOTE: The following information is being shared with the campus community in order to provide accurate information about a series of personal safety crimes that occurred off-campus but within close proximity of the University campuses. These incidents also involved members of our community. These reported cases are all part of on-going investigations being conducted by the Rochester Police Department. Therefore, information available for release is limited.
On Saturday night, May 29, 2010, Rochester Police arrested a suspect shortly after he hit a female graduate student several times with his fist(s) as she was bicycling south on the pedestrian path along the river in an area just north of the tennis courts around 9:00 pm. The suspect then fled from the area. A UR Security Officer on patrol in the vicinity came across the scene and learned of the incident that just occurred. Rochester Police were in the campus area, too, and responded promptly. The student was taken to SMH for treatment of bruises and abrasions, and then discharged. The suspect, a 46-year-old male from Cleveland, OH, was captured by police shortly thereafter and taken to jail.
Early Saturday morning, May 29, 2010, at about 2:30 am, a University staff member was shot while sitting is his car parked off-campus on Thurston Road. The staff member remains in guarded condition at SMH. Rochester Police continue their investigation into this crime. Senior University staff are in contact with his extended family and friends, ready with support as appropriate.
On Friday evening, May 28, 2010, between 8:45 pm and 8:50 pm, two off-campus resident undergraduate students reported separately to RPD that they were accosted on Genesee Street. The first incident occurred as the student was leaving a convenience store near Brooks and Genesee. A lone suspect approached him and demanded his wallet, which the student refused to relinquish. He was punched and fell to the ground as the suspect fled.
The second incident occurred as the other student was nearing his residence in theGenesee St. and Genesee Park Blvd. area when a lone suspect approached and attempted to forcibly remove a bag/package the student was carrying. The student was able to retain his personal item and the suspect fled. Both cases remain under police investigation.
Security is maintaining its full staffing and highly visible patrols to exterior areas of our campuses. We are monitoring closely and remain in regular contact with Rochester Police to insure as best we can that the University learns promptly any outcomes or resolutions of these events.
We want you to stay safe as you go about your activities. Please review these safety tips and consider how to make them part of your travel plans:
An undergraduate male student was the victim of a home invasion-type robbery at his summer break residence on Barton Street around 11:00 am, Thursday, May 27, 2010. The student answered a knock at his front door and was pushed back inside the residence by at least three young adult males. The suspects struck the student with their fists as they demanded his wallet and cash. The student was tied-up and told to remain on the floor. Several consumer electronics items were taken before the suspects fled the scene. While the suspects did use their fists as physical force, they did not display or use other types of weapons.
The student was able free himself after a period of time, at which point he got in his car and drove to River Campus to summon aid. He flagged down a University security officer patrolling on Wilson Boulevard at 11:50 am. Rochester Police and an ambulance responded promptly to campus and to the Barton Street residence. The student was examined at the scene, and then taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for follow-up care. Security located two fellow student housemates on River Campus and took them to be with their friend. The student was released from the hospital late this afternoon.
Rochester Police are aggressively pursuing a number of possible leads. The University has offered its full cooperation with law enforcement's efforts. Recorded University CCTV camera images from the Riverview Apartments and Brooks Landing areas are being examined carefully this evening for any possible leads. Temporary housing arrangements for the students are in place for tonight and we will remain available for them at any time should additional support be needed. The Dean of Students for The College has been apprised in order to facilitate additional follow-up measures tomorrow.
University Security is unable to release additional information at this time, given the active investigation by law enforcement. There is no indication, at this point, that the address where the robbery occurred has a prior history as a locale for suspicious or illegal activities.
Rochester Police have made an arrest in connection with incidents of improper touching of females in the East End area.
Peter A. Scott, 19, was taken into custody Monday night following a foot chase after officers saw him looking into windows on University Ave. He is being charged with three counts of forcible touching.

University Security and the Rochester Police are investigating a series of improper touching incidents near the Eastman School involving female victims. A SecurityNoticebulletin was distributed at Eastman on May 11, 2010, regarding an off-campus incident on Selden Street. Both University Security and Rochester Police have received additional reports of a similar nature.
Here is what we know:
On May 10, 2010, at about 11:00 p.m., an Eastman undergraduate student reported being grabbed from behind by a lone male suspect while walking on Selden Street. The suspect covered her mouth and touched her in an inappropriate manner. The student was able to scream and the suspect fled towards Windsor Street. She immediately notified 9-1-1. The Rochester Police canvassed the area. The suspect was not located. The student reported the incident to University Security the next day. The student was not injured.
On May 14, 2010, at about 11:00 p.m., an Eastman undergraduate student reported she was touched in an inappropriate manner while at the entrance to the Eastman Student Living Center on Gibbs Street. A lone male suspect ran up to her from behind and placed his hand under her skirt. The student shouted at the suspect, who then fled north on Gibbs Street. She proceeded into the Living Center and notified the on-duty security officer, who immediately notified 9-1-1. The Rochester Police conducted a thorough check of the neighborhood. The suspect was not located. The student was not injured.
Early today, May 19, 2010, at about 1:00 a.m., an Eastman undergraduate student reported she was the victim of a similar offense. The student was walking to her residence on Grove Street. She was grabbed by a lone male suspect who ran up to her from behind. The suspect touched her in an inappropriate manner and tried to forcibly take her purse. The student screamed and the suspect ran away. The student proceeded to her off-campus residence and notified Security by telephone. She was not injured. Later this morning the student met with Security Investigators, who also facilitated her filing a report with the Rochester Police.
Rochester Police informed us today, May 19, 2010, about a report of a similar nature they received on May 15, 2010 at about 11:25 p.m. Employees of Java's on Gibbs Street reported that a lone male suspect inappropriately touched a female customer. The suspect fled, eastbound, towards Scio Street. The police checked the surrounding areas. Neither the suspect nor the customer were located. The employees also stated to police that the day before, May 14, 2010, at about 8:10 p.m., the same suspect attempted to place his hand under the dress of a fellow female employee.
Here is what we are doing:
Rochester Police and University Security are actively investigating these crimes. Security and Rochester Police have increased proactive and visible patrol efforts throughout the Eastman campus and the surrounding neighborhood. CCTV images are being monitored closely and records reviewed for possible leads. As a result of the suspect(s) approach toward victims from behind, only a general description is available at this time. We strongly encourage Eastman community members to exercise extra vigilance as they travel through the downtown area. As always, personal safety escorts are available at any time between Eastman buildings as well as the East End Garage by calling Security at (585) 275-3333, or #413 from AT&T or Verizon cell phones. You may also use one of the many Blue Light Emergency Phones located throughout the Eastman campus.
For off-campus emergencies dial 9-1-1.
A female undergraduate student was the victim of an off-campus incident at about 11:00 p.m. on the evening of May 10, 2010, on Selden Street near the Eastman Student Living Center. The student was walking on Selden Street to a friend's house. She was approached from behind by a lone male suspect. The suspect touched her buttock and wrapped his arms around her. Remember these tips:
At about 3:00 pm today, Friday, April 30, 2010, two Security Supervisors were assaulted after they approached a person on the Fraternity Quadrangle who had been reported acting in a suspicious manner. A Facilities employee, regularly assigned to the area, noticed the individual enter the Sigma Chi house and called Security right away with his concerns.
Responding officers saw the individual remove a bicycle from the Todd bike rack and begin to ride away. They approached him on the Fraternity Quad and began to talk with him. The person would not identify himself so the police were requested to assist. As officers continued to talk with him, the suspect suddenly pulled a razor knife from his front pocket and slashed one supervisor, cutting him on the hand. He attempted to flee and charged at a second supervisor, striking him on the head with the knife but not causing lacerations as the blade had broken.
The suspect fled on foot over the Genesee River pedestrian bridge. Additional Security Officers responded and updated information was provided to 9-1-1. The suspect continued to Genesee Street. Security Officers assigned at Brooks Landing/Riverview warned students and other pedestrians in the immediate area and alerted Rochester Police officers who happened to be nearby. The police assisted with the apprehension and took the suspect into custody.
Police searched the suspect's bag and found two laptop computers and Security determined they had been taken from the Sigma Chi house. The students identified their property, which was returned to them. Numerous student witnesses remained in the Fraternity Quad and provided valuable information to investigators to support the filing of criminal charges. In addition, the suspect was positively identified as being in the Sigma Alpha Mu house on Thursday, during a time when another laptop was reported stolen.
Curtis Binion, 43, of Rochester, was charged with multiple felony counts of Assault, Robbery, and Burglary. He was transported to the Monroe County jail pending court action.
The Security Supervisor with the injured hand was treated at Strong Memorial Hospital and released early this evening.
It must be acknowledged that the large number of students and staff in the area who witnessed events remained and offered support that was crucial to the successful resolution of these crimes. Their efforts are truly appreciated.
NOTE: The following information is being shared with the campus community in order to provide information about an incident that occurred shortly after noon today. Precautions were taken but it was quickly determined that no actual emergency existed.
At 12:13 pm on Monday, November 30, 2009, University Security received a report from a supervisor for First Transit, the University's shuttle bus operator, that one of their drivers had just reported a loud cracking sound, not unlike the discharge of a firearm, as she drove her bus northbound on Plymouth Avenue in the Riverview Apartments Building A area.
Security officers in the area responded immediately and 9-1-1 was notified. The bus pulled into the Riverview Lot and was contacted by officers. A tow truck operator, having heard the noise as he passed the bus on Plymouth Avenue, turned around and drove into the lot as well.
The AlertUR emergency notification system was accessed and prepared for issuance of a bulletin to all undergraduates immediately in the event that information from the scene corroborated that an emergency condition existed.
The bus showed no sign of any damage. A second University shuttle bus arrived at Riverview. Both buses were held in the interior lot area pending resolution of the situation. Rochester Police arrived and also interviewed the drivers. Police checked the area. The City of Rochester's "Shot Spotter" devices in the neighborhood did not activate. Police determined that the sound heard was not the discharge of a firearm and they cleared the scene.
The shuttle buses returned to their normal routes.
University Security investigators, who had responded to Riverview, found that a structure nearby was getting a new roof. Contractors were using pneumatic nail guns to apply materials.
Please call Security's main offices at 585-275-3340 and ask to speak with a supervisor or an investigator if you have questions.
Rochester Police and University Security are investigating a report by an undergraduate male that he was assaulted while on the pedestrian trail that runs along the bank of the Genesee River, at a point just north of the Interfaith Chapel, around 5:30 am on Sunday, November 22, 2009.
The student reported leaving his Fraternity Quad residence to take a late night walk and to make a personal phone call. About 25 minutes after leaving his residence, he was at the north end of the retaining wall near the Lower Chapel area when he was approached by a lone suspect wearing dark clothes. The suspect reportedly grabbed him by the arms and pushed him against the retaining wall. He demanded cash. When the student said he had none, the suspect reportedly jabbed at the student's abdomen three times with a knife, causing at least one small puncture. The suspect then dropped the knife and fled on foot traveling southbound towards Elmwood Avenue.
The student called his parents, who advised him to contact the local 9-1-1 center. One of their dispatchers talked to the student on his cell phone until Security and Rochester Police arrived. He was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital as a precaution, which released him shortly after 8 am.
Security and Police searched the area thoroughly. A paring knife was recovered at the scene. In addition, a police K-9 team was brought to aid in the search; however, the team was unable to pick up a scent to follow.
All recorded images for cameras in the area were checked. The student is observed crossing the Fraternity Quad at 5:08 am. He is not observed on cameras, again. There are images of a few other individuals traveling in the general area, before and after the time of the incident. None are wearing dark clothing. Investigators are continuing to review video footage from earlier that night.
Fauver Stadium lights will remain illuminated all night through the week and Security patrols will monitor closely the pathways along Wilson Boulevard and the Genesee River.
If you have any information, please contact Rochester Police by calling 9-1-1. In addition, you may contact Security by dialing 585-275-3333 or #413 (locally) from any AT&T or Verizon phone and ask for a supervisor. Pick-up any direct line Blue Light Phone or dial x13 from any campus phone.
At approximately 8:40 pm Friday evening, November 6, 2009, a male undergraduate reports he was the victim of a strong-arm robbery while in the men's restroom located on the lower level of Hoyt Hall. The student reports that a lone individual was already in the restroom when he entered. Moments later the individual come up behind the student, held an unidentified object at the student's upper back/shoulder area and demanded that the student turnover his cash. The student considered very briefly whether the suspect actually had a weapon, but decided not to take a chance, so he surrendered his cash. The lone suspect then fled the bathroom area in an unknown direction.
The student returned to his campus residence and called Security right away. The Rochester Police were contacted via 9-1-1 and requested to respond. Security officers checked campus areas near Hoyt with negative results. The victim provided a partial description of the suspect as follows:
Six Security staff assigned to River Campus patrols or special events maintained frequent and visible patrols of the campus. The Fauver Stadium lights remained on their lower setting throughout the night to enhance further the illumination of campus grounds.
At the time of this incident a movie was being shown in Hoyt Auditorium. If you were in the area of Hoyt Hall around 8:40 pm Friday evening and observed individual(s) or activities that you deemed questionable, please contact the Security Communications Center by dialing x13 from any campus phone to report what you have noticed. If you are off-campus and observe questionable activities, call 9-1-1 directly.
On Tuesday, September 29, 2009, a Security Notice was distributed with information about a shots fired report investigated by the Rochester Police in the South Plymouth Avenue area, just north of the Riverview Apartments. It contained facts known at the time, including that several persons had been taken into custody. No injuries were reported.
In the days since, Rochester Police have responded to additional reports of shots fired and persons fighting one another in the vicinity of Plymouth Avenue at Cottage Street, and on Jefferson Avenue. They have identified many of the persons involved and some arrests have been made. It appears that the individuals involved knew one another and these were not random acts. The police intend to maintain a very visible presence in the area and to pursue information that may result in the arrest of additional persons. Police officers will take an active stance in the enforcement of local and state laws.
For the next several days the University community should use alternate routes when traveling in the area north of Riverview in the vicinity of Cottage Street and Jefferson Avenue near Plymouth Avenue. If you are in this vicinity remain alert to any events that might reasonably suggest the start-up of a disturbance. Remove yourself immediately and call 9-1-1 to report what you have seen. Rochester Police will patrol the area thoroughly. You may encounter an officer and be stopped for brief questioning. If the officer re-directs you to another travel path, follow their instructions. The officer may be aware of a situation being monitored and the desire is to keep bystanders safe.
The Gold Line shuttle is available. It continues to run on its regular schedule between Rush Rhees Library and Riverview, as well as to neighboring streets. Gold Line Shuttle Service Schedule
