Mission Statement

To provide, through trained volunteers, a prompt, high quality and caring emergency medical serivce to the community of the University of Rochester River Campus.

Who We Are

The Medical Emergency Response Team was created by the University in 1972 to provide first aid and life support to the members of the university community. To reduce response times, two MERT groups were created; one to serve the River Campus and the other, the Medical Center. We operate under the jurisdiction of the Campus Security office and are dispatched to calls by the Security dispatcher. On the air, we are identified as River Campus MERT.
We come a long way from our humble beginnings in providing first aid to offering Basic Life Support to over 4,000 students, faculty and staff. In the past year, we handled approximately 300 calls for service. We are trained to operate the automated external defibrilator and have been authorised to dispense albuterol and epinephrine.
All our members are 100% volunteers and is largely made up of undergraduate students. We are constantly looking for new members and would like to see a greater participation from the graduate students, staff and even faculty. Our members come from all majors. Some students have used MERT as a stepping stone to further their education in nursing and medicine. We have quite a few members serving in the local volunteer ambulance agencies as well.
MERT receives funding from the Students Association and is a budgeted item of Campus Security. We would gladly receive any donations to improve our services and training.
Our 'base' is located in the basement of Spurrier Gym, where we store our equipment, hold meetings and training sessions. We currently do not have office hours but most officers and crew chiefs spend time in the base. Do stop by, we hope to meet you soon. If you enjoy helping others and sharpening your first aid skills, we love to have you as a member!
