A joint effort by Rochester Police and University Security investigators resulted in the arrest Thursday afternoon of a suspect in the theft of two musical instruments on Wednesday, April 29, 2009, that belonged to two students from the Eastman School of Music. A violin, along with its accompanying bow and case, as well as a classical guitar, were taken from separate unlocked and unattended practice rooms in the Annex building.
The guitar was recovered late Wednesday afternoon by its owner after an Eastman professor learned of the theft and alerted a musical instrument vendor whose business is near the School. The thief had pawned the guitar earlier that day. Police recovered the violin Thursday afternoon at a second hand dealer's shop after the suspect was taken into custody.
The University is not revealing the name of the suspect at this time as authorities are still processing him. It can be reported that the suspect has no known relationship with the University as a current or former staff member or student. He is expected to appear in Court on Friday to face initial charges of Burglary and Grand Larceny.
The prompt resolution of these cases was made possible by a number of factors including the diligent work of Police and Security investigators, the very helpful efforts of an Eastman professor, the value of CCTV images captured by Security cameras in the area, and the ready availability of the victims to assist with investigative requests.
