Security Update

(Arrests In Recent Robberies
Of Student And Jogger)

Three suspects have been arrested by Rochester Police and charged with the strong arm robbery of a UR undergraduate student that occurred on Wednesday, March 21, 2012, at about 10:40 pm as he walked on the west end of the pedestrian bridge enroute home. The suspects have been charged, too, in connection with another strong-arm robbery against a jogger as he traveled on a pedestrian path in Genesee Valley Park just south of I-390, at about 7:40 pm earlier that same evening. The suspects were apprehended by police in response Sunday evening, March 25, 2012, to a suspicious activity call in a vacant garage on the west side of the city. Some of the victims' property was recovered at that scene.

The three persons in custody and charged with Robbery, Assault and Grand Larceny are as follows:

  • Chris Rutley (age 17)
  • Denton Fraction (age 17)
  • Shannon (Shane) Austin (age 18)

Rochester Police and Security are following-up on investigative leads regarding a fourth individual. The University will continue with its heightened uniformed presence for the coming days until all investigative issues outstanding have been resolved.

Security Notice

(Robbery and Assault Of Student
On Pedestrian Bridge)

Rochester Police and University Security are investigating a robbery that occurred on the west end of the pedestrian bridge at approximately 10:40 pm, Wednesday, March 21, 2012. A male student called Security from the Blue Light Emergency Phone on the campus side of the bridge to report he had just been robbed and assaulted after leaving campus via the bridge towards South Plymouth Avenue.

Four male suspects passed him going in the opposite direction on the west end of the bridge. Moments later, after two bicyclists also passed by, the suspects turned and approached the student from behind. When they caught up to him they punched him twice and took a backpack and personal items. The suspects fled towards the area of South Plymouth Ave. and Genesee Street.

The first responding Security officers observed the 4 suspects in the vicinity of Genesee St. and Plymouth Ave. Upon noticing the approaching officers, the suspects scattered. Officers maintained visual contact as long as possible. Two entered a house on a nearby street, whereupon Rochester Police responded and made contact with people in the area. They were unable to locate the suspects. The two other suspects disappeared into the night.

The student received a laceration and was transported by Security to Strong Emergency as a precaution. Security made immediate adjustments for additional patrol support to the area overnight. Additional patrols will be maintained until further notice.

Security CCTV video images captured part of the incident. They are being reviewed closely by Security and RPD. A follow-up search by Security investigators, this morning led to the recovery of some of the victim's property.

All the suspects wore dark pants, with two wearing white T-shirts and two wearing dark T-shirts. A number of people were traveling in the area of the incident.

If you believe you may have knowledge of this incident or think you may have witnessed the event, please call University Security at (585) 275-3333 or #413 from your AT&T or Verizon cell phone. Off-campus call Rochester Police at 9-1-1.

NOTE: The University learned a short while ago that Rochester Police are investigating a strong-arm robbery/assault with similar attributes that occurred to a jogger in Genesee Valley Park, south of the I-390 bridge, around 7:40 pm Wednesday evening. We are working with police to determine whether there is a connection to the event involving the University student.
